Dear Club members,
As we approach the end of another season I wish to draw your attention to a few matters that will impact on the road ahead for Ulster boxing and on the individual Clubs and their boxers.
When I was re-elected to the office of President of the Ulster Council in September 2007 I was anxious to press forward with a long-term plan to guide us in future years. The vision I have, entails the development of better facilities, the provision of an organizational structure that would bring increased opportunities for our boxers and allow better communication between all who are involved in the sport.
Establishing and developing positive contact with organizations such as Sport NI, the NI Commonwealth Games Council and various statutory groups is a constant challenge but is one that we are continuing to meet. Those communication efforts are greatly facilitated by the Councilís own website (www.ulsterboxing.org) which is proving to be a vital communication resource as more and more Clubs tap into it.
My position as secretary of the Referee and Judges Commission of AIBA has given me a real opportunity to make very useful contacts with influential boxing personnel from many countries and it is my wish to promote the status of our part of the world in the eyes of this audience and to secure benefits for Ulster boxing.
In relation to how we can improve our management arrangements at Ulster council level I have proposed that we proceed with the formation of the following Commissions
I will continue to inform you periodically of the progress of our strategy which will take us to the forthcoming Beijing Olympics and on to the 2012 Games in London with the Commonwealth, European and World competitions helping us to set standards and achieve targets en route.
I am prompted to add to this letter my disappointment at the recent unwelcome developments within the Ulster Council. A number of people who attend Council meetings are eager to have me displaced as your President.
The real strength of any organisation is in the cohesion of members working together towards a common aim. While I believe there are few, if any who want to weaken our sport there is a current negativity in a small group of members which is based in personal grievances.
Despite these efforts to cause upset I wish to confirm my intention to remain in the Office of President and I intend to continue to work for all clubs throughout Ulster.
I ask for your continued support in achieving success for Ulster Boxing and assure you of my dedication and commitment to our sport of Amateur Boxing and also to the principles of the Ulster Provincial Council of the I.A.B.A.
Your servant in sport
President Ulster Provincial Council IABA
