Welcome and Thanks

On behalf of the Ulster Council, Irish Amateur Boxing Association, I welcome everyone to this evenings event in which an English Representative team will box Ulster.

I particularly welcome and offer my profound thanks to our English visitors – boxers and officials. My sincere gratitude is also recorded in respect of you, the punters, whose support is necessary if our sport is to flourish. Our appreciation is paid to the Dockworkers Sports, Social and Recreational Club for the use of their premises and to our caterer, Kevin McCourt of Fortwilliam Golf Club.

A special Thanks to John Rooney of Pug Athletic for supplying the Ulster Boxers Vests

Finally I wish everyone a good evenings entertainment and to all the boxers –

The Very Best of Luck.

Pat McCrory MBE

North team sinks English

Seconds Out
By Eamonn O’Hara & Thomas Hawkins
09/06/2009

There were three very close calls for Ulster boxers in a cracking night’s boxing at the Dockworker’s social club in Belfast at the weekend.
But it all came right on the night as the Northern Ireland team celebrated a hard-fought 6-3 win over their English counterparts.
Stephen Donnelly (All Saints, Ballymena), Niall McGinley (Bishop Kelly) and Conor Coyle (St Joseph’s, Derry) were all deadlocked at the final bell, the computer countback needed to determine the winners of these light-welter and welter contests.
“It was a great night’s boxing for the supporters and a great win for Ulster boxing against a strong English team,’’ said Ulster vice-president Jim Noonan.
“All the lads performed well and the three countback contests added further drama to the evening’s boxing.
“Both teams gave it their all tonight and I have to say that the fitness and skill of the Ulster side was a treat to watch. This is just a small section of the talent in Ulster boxing at present, right across all the grades and there is great talent coming through.’’
A home match against the USA is being planned for Friday, October 23 also at the Dockworker’s club.
