From BoxBelfast2011

County Antrim Boxing produced all 5 of the boxing medals (3 Gold and 2 Silver), which was 50% of the Northern Ireland medal haul, at the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games.

To celebrate this magnificent achievement we plan to have the Northern Ireland Elite Boxing Team competing against top class European opposition as both a showcase for Ireland’s most successful sport and to mark the 10th anniversary of Belfast hosting the AIBA World Boxing Championships back in 2001.

We aim to make this Box Belfast an annual event on the European Elite Amateur Boxing calendar and thus participate in the national development before the London Olympics and as a legacy event to maximise competitor participation and audience attendance.

With the 5 Commonwealth Medalists in action and the potential to act as an Olympic qualifier for local boxers the potential is there with the right professional support to make the event a huge success.

Three of the 5 Delhi medal winners hail from West Belfast so this inaugural event will take place there (Emerald Roadhouse, Finaghy Road North - old Devenish Arms) to maximise attendance, with Ballysillan hosting the following year before the London Olympics and thereafter depending on level of success.
